What Is Open-Cell & Closed-Cell Spray Foam

Open-cell spray foam is a type of spray foam that has open cell structure. This type of spray foam is made from a finer, less dense open-cell structure which allows it to be less dense than closed-cell spray foam. The open cells are also smaller in size and are more air permeable, making it easier for air to pass through the material.

Open-cell spray foam insulation is made up of small cells which are open to the air. These cells allow the foam to expand and contract as it reaches the desired temperature, but not so much that it becomes stiff and hard to handle. The open-cell structure of spray foam makes it quite different from closed-cell spray foam, which has cells that are completely sealed and cannot expand or contract.

The cells provide more surface area for heat and air flow to escape, which means it can be used in higher temperatures than closed-cell spray foam.

So what is it the difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray?

Closed-cell spray foam is a type of spray foam that has sealed cells. Unlike open-cell spray foam, closed-cell spray foam is made with a denser, closed cell structure which makes it more durable than open-cell products. The closed cells are also larger and thicker than their counterparts in the open cell format, so they can withstand more weight without breaking down or deforming during shipping or shipping itself.

Closed-cell spray foam insulation is made up of solid boards or panels of closed-cell polyurethane that are filled with gas. When sprayed into place, this material expands much like a sponge, creating a solid block of insulation. Closed-cell spray foam is typically used in houses with little to no insulation on the underside of ceilings or walls due to its density and resistance to airflow.

The cells provide more surface area for heat and air flow to escape, which means it can be used in lower temperatures than open-cell spray foam.

Both open- and closed-cell spray foams can be used for insulation purposes and can be used for many different applications such as underlayments, insulating panels, flashings and adhesives for sealing joints or seams in your home or business building envelope.

Open-cell spray foam insulation is a great choice for those who want more flexibility in their construction and installation process. Open-cell spray foam is easier to install because it can be cut with a knife or even blown into place using air pressure without having to worry about damaging the cell structure or losing any of the material once it’s in place.
