Allowing you to make significant savings and make a commitment to the reference, solar panels are increasingly popular. They are able to transform solar radiation into usable electricity directly in your home. A technological feat that allows more and more households to calmly plan their energy expenditure. Solar panels: state-of-the-art technology
Solar panels are made up of an array of photovoltaic cells, each producing its own voltage (about 0.5 V) when exposed to light. Associated with each other by means of a series and parallel assembly, they are capable of simultaneously producing a voltage of several tens of volts for intensity of a few amperes. Once these intensities have been produced, they are communicated to the metal grid and placed directly on the photovoltaic cells. This thus makes it possible to drive the current to a conductive plate that covers the whole. The current produced by the cells is then collected.
In order to offer complete protection to the cells, the photovoltaic panels are covered with a glass plate. Resistant to weather conditions, shocks, and debris, the latter makes it possible to extend the life of the installation without ever reducing the light supply.
The composition of each solar panel is variable. You can thus find some which consist of:
- Amorphous silicon offers a yield of around 6%. These panels can be used with direct radiation, but also with diffused light, and they can be available on flexible supports, which facilitates their movement.
- Polycrystalline silicon, which is distinguished by a yield of about 15%, is less important in cloudy weather.
- And monocrystalline silicon, whose efficiency can reach almost 25%.
- The higher the yield, the higher the price of the solar panel. But it is also the assurance of producing more paneles solares medellin energy.
There are different kinds of solar panels on the market today. They are classified into two groups:
- Photovoltaic solar panels, transform solar radiation into electricity. The latter can then be used in housing or resold to EDF.
- And thermal solar panels transform it into heat.

Understand how a photovoltaic panel works
Photovoltaic cells are essential in the operation of the solar panel. Due to their composition, they react in contact with solar radiation, thus creating an electric current of a few milliamperes. Depending on the type of cell present in the panel, it is then possible to know its maximum power which is expressed in Watts-peak (Wp). If you want to learn more about how solar power is generated, you can get to know the solar power basics on our website.
This is the ideal value of the solar panel, the one that corresponds to the maximum power that the panel can provide under perfect conditions:
- In the presence of a panel temperature of 25° C;
- With strong sunshine (solar irradiation of the order of 1000 W per square meter);
- And an ideal inclination of solar radiation (45°).
This value, called standard, makes it possible to compare the panels with each other. It also allows you to know which panel is the most powerful and which can therefore produce more solar electricity. But above all, it allows you to know what the expected energia solar solar energy production will be according to the surface area dedicated to the panels and your place of residence.
How to choose your solar panel?
It is therefore advisable to be attentive to the selection of solar panels and to take advantage of the advice of professionals, such as the IZI by EDF account managers, to make the right choice.
1 – Take into account the surface available and dedicated to solar panels
The first criterion allowing you to make your choice among the many models of solar panels is the surface that you plan to dedicate to your photovoltaic installation. It is then to be associated with the size of the panels you are considering, which itself differs according to the composition. We consider for example that for:
Amorphous silicon: 1 square meter is equivalent to approximately 60 Wc;
Polycrystalline silicon: 1 square meter is equivalent to approximately 100 Wc;
Monocrystalline silicon: 1 square meter is equivalent to approximately 200 Wp.
2 – Choose your solar panels according to the power and your place of residence
It is also necessary to study the power in kWh you need for a year.
Know for example that it is estimated that one kWp (i.e. 1000 Wp) produces around 850 kWh in the north of France and around 1250 kWh in the south of France. This will allow you to make your choice taking into account the peak power of the different panels you want to compare. Also, consider the orientation of your photovoltaic panels. They should ideally be positioned due south so as to form an angle of 35° with the horizontal. This position is the one that will give you the best return.
